Lane MacKenzie Collins
The reporter Lane came back to "Savannah" in the pilot episode, to go to her best friend Reese's wedding. While she was there, her aparment in NY had been robbed of all her stuff. After that, she quickly meets up with her old high school crush, Dean Collins, who raises a son by himself. Lane then finds out that her trust fund has been emptied by Travis, who is later found dead and is a suspect in murdering him. It doesn't take long for the police to solve the crime and Lane is free. Reese lets Lane live in her house.
Dean and Lane quickly starts a romance, and right after that, his wife Jeannie comes back and walks in on them. She and Dean call it quits, but after she sees Jeannie kissing a strange man, she starts investigating and finds out that she's engaged to a man in Atlanta and tells Dean. He breaks it off with her and they get back together, only this time, his son Jason doesn't like him. When they do finally become friends, Lane is kidnapped by a psychotic ex-partner of Deans. She gets locked up and is believed to be dead, by her friends. Lane gets a clue out and Dean and Reese sets out to find her and they save her in the last minute from being snake-bitten. Lane and Dean is once again happy and starts planning their wedding; that is until Lane's fianceé Terry arrives and it is revealed that he wants her back, but she doesn't want him. They kiss good-bye and Dean walks in on the kiss and gets the wrong idea. Terry leaves and Dean and Lane makes up quickly.
Meanwhile, Lane starts working on a story about Edward Burton, and is fired by Eleanor. She continues to work on the story, but shortly after, she's in a car-crash with Dean.
They're both fine, but Lane gets some pills for her broken arm, and gets addicted on them. She tries to throw them in the trash, but digs them up again. After she's taken all the pills, she goes to the doctors office and steals a prescription for herself. As Dean and Lane's wedding arrives, she's gotten hooked by both alcohol and the pills. She passes out on the day of her wedding and misses it. Everybody then figures out that Lane's got a drug problem. She starts going to a group and gets rid of her addiction. Lane and Dean starts patching up their relationship and decides to take it slow. She also gets a new job at the "Savannah Weekly", the only paper not owned by Eleanor(now married to Edward). Her new job doesn't last long, because Eleanor buys the paper and fires almost everybody there.
Dean and Lane gets married in the series (season) finale.
